RABIES AWARENESS ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED IN CALUBIAN

Last March 26, 2013, a joint team from DA-RFU 8 represented by Dr Ursua of the Livestock Division as well as a team from Leyte Provincial Veterinary Office headed by no other than the Provincial Veterinarian together with the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist personnel had conducted Rabies Awareness Caravan which was conducted in Calubian Gymnasium. The activity was attended by the Brgy Captains which were invited for the purpose of creating the Bantay Rabies sa Barangay (BRB) to strictly monitor rabies cases in their respective barangays as well as help in conducting rabies awareness to their populace. The activity was also attended by some DepEd personnel wich are responsible in disseminating the information to their pupils. Calubian has been conducting intensive anti-rabies vaccination to the entire municipality in its intention to make the town a rabies-free municipality. This was made possible due to the support provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation who has provided the unlimited vaccines to be used for the said campaign. A team of vaccinators of OMA-Calubian, in response to this call has conducted a house-to-house visits in order to attain a higher percentage of accomplishment. Last 2012 more than 3,000 dogs were vaccinated. During this March activity, a motorcade was conducted followed by lectures about Rabies as well as a castration of dog was also done. AQUA-SILVICULTURE PROJECT ESTABLISHED IN CALUBIAN

One of the project which shows an active collaboration between the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Calubian through the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMA) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is the Aqua-silviculture project. The principle of putting up this project is a combination of mangrove rehabilitation at the same time setting up of livelihood project such as kingcrab and lapu-lapu culture within the mangrove areas. In the municipality of Calubian, the aqua-silviculture project has been set-up at Brgy Nipa with Mr Fanny Pedida, one of the Agriculture Technician of OMA as the cooperator. (Mr Fanny Pedida, the cooperator in white T-Shirt) BFAR has given support for this kind of project as an incentive for Brgy Nipa as one of the site for mangrove rehab being part of the National Greening Program (NGP) of President Pinoy. Mr Jacinto Ebero, AT-Fisheries of OMA has closely monitored the project to ensure its proper implementation. In fact, even at its early stage of implementation, the project has already drawn visitors just to see how the project was implemented.
